I’m not sure he’d recognize one with no rust!

I can only assume you’re referring to the nice GMT800 Tahoe, not that awful tin foil-constructed, no-frame-having, zero-interior-space, terrible-engined POS XJ...

Ha! I actually met him and had a long chat with him before the Indy 500 this year (I saved him a parking spot where we camp every year). One of the things we talked about is how amazed he was to see rust free XJs running around down there. Indy is far enough south that the winters there are much milder, so stuff lasts a lot longer there. Even his red XJ that he changed the motor in is missing huge chunks of rocker panel.

This is such a hot take, that I can’t tell if you’re trolling or not.

Here in northern IN, that would be close to $7k. I went to buy one priced at $6k last weekend and someone beat me to it by 20 minutes.

Wow, at least we’re not alone. I search for them all the time, even complete stripper models with bad paint seem to be $5k. For a 20 year old Jeep with roll up windows.
I see a Scirocco in your profile pic, yours? Saw a killer stock metallic green one on a flatbed recently, I’m a VW dork too.

Slightly trolling, but XJs really are shitboxes... I’ve owned that shitbox for 15 years.

I don’t think people own anything they don’t like for 15 years , let alone something they would call a shit box.
I had one for a year, went past 200k miles in it. Loved every day.

Go West on an adventure and bring one back home. I bought mine rust-free when I lived in CA for $1,500. Paint was flat and the interior was roached, but the metal was straight and it ran perfect (for a 4.0). I spray painted it flat-tan and cleaned the inside as well as I could (it still needs new seats, tho). Then I moved to Michigan. Now I can proudly say that I might own the last rust-free XJ in the Great Lakes!

Yes, that’s my daily driver, an ‘81 Scirocco S rocking over a quarter million miles. My wife hates it. Our conversation before I headed out to buy the Jeep That Got Away last weekend:
Wife: After you buy the Jeep, you’re going to sell the VW, right?
Me: Hahahahahahahaha. No.

Fantastic, I’d love to find a good Mk1 ‘rocco to do the same. Sounds like a conversation I’d have with my wife.

They’re hard to find. A dentist in a town nearby used this one to commute, then handed it down to his son. I bought it for less than a grand before the MkI prices started going up. It’s super cheap to maintain usually, but it has started burning oil lately.

I never said I didn’t love it, but you can’t tell me XJs were carefully assembled with only the highest quality parts and workmanship.
And there are lots of engines that go for hundreds of thousands of miles... The 4.0 just does it while drinking lots of gas, making not much power, overheating a lot, and leaking from every seal and gasket. They make mediocre power, pollute like crazy, have a stupid reverse flow head, and are known to throw rods and wipe out cam lobes.
I love it, but it is an utter shitbox, and it needs to come down off the pedestal.
